RICE
MILITARY YARD OF THE SEASON
Sponsored by Power Express
The Rice Military Yard of the Season contest has been created to promote goodwill among our neighbors and reward exemplary lawn care in our community. The purpose of this program is to recognize our neighbors who demonstrate superior efforts in maintaining their property, thereby contributing to the overall appearance of our community at large. This new and exciting program, with a nice reward for your efforts, will be administered entirely by volunteers.
For the months September through November, and again for the months of February through May, the Rice Military Civic Club will choose a lawn that best exemplifies the qualities of: uniqueness, beauty, and curb appeal of your front and side yards, as well as the exterior of the house.
The Civic Club will select one residential yard in November and one in May. The winner of the Yard of the Season will receive a $250 El Tiempo gift certificate and be provided with a decorative yard sign for display indicating their winning yard, as well as a posting and photo on our community website and newsletter.
There will also be an additional prize for the most improved yard and the winner will receive a $50 Home Depot gift certificate as well as a posting and photo on our community website and newsletter.
Nominations can be made by emailing president@rice-military.org or by using the form below.

Contest
Guidelines
RECOMMENDED JUDGING CRITERIA Rice Military Civic Club Yard of the Season candidates are judged solely on the total exterior appearance of their property and front yard as viewed from the street. General upkeep of the yard and property is paramount.
Factors include the overall appearance, tidiness and neatness of the front of the property as evidenced by pruned, trimmed and shaped foliage, edged and defined lawns, borders & flower beds, and a visually appealing facade. Each yard will be chosen from the nomination given to the Rice Military Civic Club. Nominations can be made by emailing president@rice-military.org or by simply filling in the nomination form above.
LAWN (if applicable): Grass should be healthy with no bare spots or excessive weeds. Grass shall be mowed and edged, and trimmed around foundations and fences. Debris (garbage, pet feces, etc.) shall be picked up and removed.
LANDSCAPE & FLOWER BEDS (if applicable): Beds shall be weeded and edged, flowers must be deadheaded and dead plants removed, trees and shrubs neat, and other natural areas cleaned. Beautification efforts can include new flowers, new trees, and new shrubs, etc.
WALKWAYS & DRIVEWAYS: Walkways and driveways shall be clean (including trash containers or yard products hidden from view). The area in front of the curb must be free from debris and dirt. The appearance after dusk will be taken into consideration and can include accent lighting, safety lighting, visible interior lighting, etc.
AESTHETICS: The overall look of landscaping theme is important. Having a theme, whether it's formal or informal, or use of color and textures, or garden art are all ways to gain points along with an inviting front entryway. Other original and creative touches can be used to show personality such as hanging baskets, pots, yard art, bird feeders, etc.
